Welcome to the very first episode of Spooky Side Quests, a new mini-series from Girls Just Wanna Get Haunted! These shorter, more conversational episodes take us off the beaten path and into the weird, spooky, and wonderfully strange places we discover along the way. From paranormal events to quirky museums, oddball shops, and roadside curiosities, Spooky Side Quests are all about the adventures that don't quite fit into our regular episodes.

For our first Side Quest, we traveled to DeKalb, Illinois to attend our very first paranormal convention: Obscura Paracon. Held inside the castle-like Altgeld Hall at Northern Illinois University, the convention brought together paranormal investigators, psychics, vendors, authors, and enthusiasts for a weekend filled with workshops, shopping, and all things strange and unexplained. Join us as we share our favorite moments, and our first experience stepping into the world of paranormal conventions.

Altged. Alt- something Hall, Altgeld Hall, at Northern Illinois University. The entire event felt like stepping into another world before we even walked through the doors, because it looks like a castle, gargoyles included.

Uh, between the stone walls, gothic architecture, uh, the atmosphere alone made it feel like we were entering some secret society gathering for ghost hunters and weird little cryptid enthusiasts. Obscura Paracon describes itself as a celebration of the paranormal, the unexplained, and the beautifully strange. And honestly, that description's pretty accurate. The convention brought together paranormal investigators, psychic mediums, vendors, authors, metaphysical practitioners, and people who simply love the strange and unknown. Whether you're deeply into the paranormal world or just paranormal curious, there is something for everyone there One of the coolest parts of the convention was how interactive everything felt. There were lectures and presentations happening throughout the weekend covering haunted locations, paranormal investigations, metaphysical topics and personal experiences. There were workshops where attendees could get on-hand experience with different paranormal tools and practices instead of just sitting and listening to someone talk. And then there was a marketplace, which was basically impossible to walk through without spending money. Isn't that right?

Yeah, there were some tour guides. Like, um, there's this guy that does tours in Chicago, and I literally went on one of his tours the Octo- like, last October. It was so weird.

But yeah, people, showing, like, videos and recordings of evidence that they've caught, some teams promoting events happening all over the Midwest that they were throwing. Every booth had something different, and every person there had a story to tell. It really felt less like a convention floor and more like wandering through some strange little supernatural bazaar. There was, like, the one guy, he cracked me up. He's like, "Well, I'm really sad now. I should stop telling people about this." And now I follow him on TikTok.

Yeah. We attended two workshops during the convention. One was definitely more successful than the other.

workshop or something? But yeah, that was sold out. Like, my favorite, which I'm guessing is also your favorite workshop that we did- was the aura photography session. I've had my aura photographed before in July. So I was kind of really excited to compare the results, 'cause they can change. So the first time, I was, like, completely orange everything, with like a little bit of green in a certain area. And the reader was like... said it was powerful, intense, and kind of badass. And this time, my aura was, like, completely different, but it was also, like, a completely different setup, and, like, a computer program with, like, so many statistics.

I, uh, I think it was also a sold-out class, and like... or close to selling out.

So, like, I think she was just spending too much time going over everybody's report.

So we were the last to arrive to the class, and like-

It was like a weird side stairwell that, like, wasn't marked. It was like, it... the state... I don't know, it was weird.

Jasmine 10:10

Yeah. So we got lost, and then, like, we arrived, like, a few minutes late, or, like, right on time. So the... We didn't have to do it in this order, but the way it ended up going is, like, she did her presentation, and then she was kinda like, "Okay, who wants to get their picture taken first?" And it kinda just went, like, the closest person to her, and then it went down the line. But we were the farthest people- Yeah away from her, so she just ran out of time.

We also didn't get to sit together. There was, like, someone in between us.

Don't even... We're not even gonna talk about that guy. I wasn't gonna bring him up. I'm just saying we didn't get to sit together. We didn't get to sit together. That's my spot. Yeah, that was weird. So the most prominent color in my reading this time, which I'm pretty sure is the same as Lacey, was yellow 'Cause we're the same person. Uh, although there were several different colors mixed throughout the image, watching the process happen in real time, like on the computer, whoa, was kinda fascinating. The system was connected to sensors that tracked energetic changes during the reading, and you could literally watch the numbers flux- fluctuate as emotions shifted. At one point, like Lacey said, we were in a little closet, the photographer, like tech, took a step backwards, and she like tripped a little bit, and I thought she was gonna fall, so like my hand was still on the reader, but I was like and like put my hand out, but it like scared me. She caught herself. She didn't fall. But like- My readings, like I literally watched some of them go from this level to drop- after my... It's like a five before, and now it's a two in things. It was so weird to watch, because I was just, like, worried and scared for her.

It was like my reaction was reflected in, like, the actual data. It was so weird, 'cause there's, like, bars. According to the report, yellow auras are associated with bright, optimistic, intelligent, and creative personalities. They're considered energetic people who enjoy humor, spontaneity, creativity, and finding joy in life. The description talked a lot about optimism, emotional balance, and not taking life too seriously, uh, which is pretty accurate. The report itself was over, like, 15 pages long and went incredibly in depth into emotional patterns, personality traits, energy levels, and interpersonal dynamics. Whether you fully believe in aura photography or not, the entire experience was fascinating and surprisingly personal. The report, the actual, like, reading part was a little rushed since we ran out of time.

The second workshop we attended was focused on spirit photography, which sounded extremely cool in theory. Unfortunately, it ended up feeling less like a paranormal workshop and more like a history lesson on the evolution of cameras.

One thing I really appreciated about Obscura Paracon overall was. The environment, So you had hardcore paranormal investigators talking shop with complete beginners, people openly discussing p- spiritual practices without judgment, skeptics attending lectures out of curiosity, uh, vendors sharing genuinely unique creations and experiences. It felt less like a convention built around trying to convince people ghosts are real, and more like a gathering of people fascinated by mystery and the unknown.
